Who Do You Know?

On January 16 at e3rd Steakhouse & Lounge in Los Angeles, The Red Party fundraiser treated an enthusiastic crowd to live music from local acts Long Nguyen and Dez Hope, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction and prize drawings that offered some amazing items, including a week of TaeBo classes led by Billy Blanks and Caribbean resort packages, among others. Guests were encouraged to dress in red or red-accented cocktail attire and, if anyone needed a pop of color, red AIDS awareness ribbons were handed out at the door. Gimel Hooper served as emcee/DJ for the evening, which included plenty of dancing. Speakers included Alfredia Thomas, president of Women Alive Coalition, and Pamela Coffey, an HIV-positive woman who has been helped by Women Alive. Coffey’s daughter, Adrena Coffey, read a poem about her mother.

The goals were twofold: to raise awareness about Women Alive, a Los Angeles-based treatment-focused nonprofit dedicated to serving the needs of women living with HIV/AIDS, and to raise funds for Who Do You Know?, a short film in the making from director/producer Sade Oyinade and screenwriter Jerry Brown. Focusing on HIV/AIDS in the African-American community, particularly among heterosexuals, the boy-meets-girl film follows a high school senior as he navigates misinformation and misconceptions about “who” can contract HIV. The event raised about a quarter of the $10,000 needed for the film. A portion of all fundraising proceeds is directed to Women Alive.
