VAVA VOOM, the 10th Annual Visual AIDS Vanguard Awards & Spring Gala, will celebrate “individuals who reinforce the mission of Visual AIDS by strengthening the cultural history of art activism and AIDS advocacy.”
The honorees include Julie Ault, an artist, curator, writer, and editor who cofounded the New York City-based collaborative Group Material; Jim Hodges, an artist who works in a wide array of media and who created the film “Untitled,” which was screened at numerous sites on World AIDS Day/Day With(out) Art in 2011; and Luna Luis Ortiz, a photographer, ballroom community member and advocate, youth-empowerment advocate, and longtime HIV awareness spokesperson. Ortiz will receive the Bill Olander VAVA, an award that honors an individual in the creative arts living with HIV.
The event will be hosted by Mike Albo and include music spun by DJ Aaron Tilford and a performance by Justin Vivian Bond. Attendees will be treated to cocktails and light fare, along with the chance to bid on art and win raffle prizes, such as a custom Polaroid portrait by Lucas Michael and ceramics from Jonathan Adler. As a way to mark the tenth anniversary, the event will also recognize the work of VAVA cofounder and galleryist Pavel Zoubok.
