America the Disgusting
A post-election reflection
by Hank Trout
It’s 8:31 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2020.
In sixty-eight years, I have never been so disgusted by my fellow Americans as I am this morning.
How in holy hell can this presidential race be so close?!
No matter who eventually wins the presidential race, this election has exposed tens of millions of my countrymen as racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, anti-science cold-blooded fascists.
Half of my countrymen thoroughly disgust me.
They voted to re-elect a man who ripped infants and toddlers from their mothers and imprisoned them in cages along our border.
They voted to re-elect a man who consistently degrades and devalues women, even those who let him grab them by their… privates.
They voted to re-elect a man who has withdrawn from the Paris Accord on the environment and eliminated over a hundred environmental protection regulations.
They voted to re-elect a man who started his 2016 campaign by calling Mexican immigrants drug-dealing criminals and rapists.
They voted to re-elect a man who has turned the Department of Justice into his personal law firm charged with prosecuting his political “enemies.”
They voted to re-elect a man who withdrew from the Iran nuclear treaty, allowing Iran to pursue their hopes of a nuclear weapon.
They voted to re-elect a man who has coddled tyrants like Putin, Kim, and Erdogan, while disparaging and alienating our allies, to the point of threatening to leave NATO, a would-be Mussolini who “jokes” about becoming “president for life.”
They voted to re-elect a man who has baldly lied to the American people over 20,000 times in four years and who disparages the press as ‘the enemy of the people.”
They voted to re-elect a man has stolen one Supreme Court appointment and has confirmed hundreds of anti-LGBTQ anti-woman anti-consumer judges throughout the federal judiciary.
They voted to re-elect a man who has declared war on a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions.
They voted to re-elect a man who is hell-bent on destroying the Social Security and Medicare that so many of us long-term HIV/AIDS survivors depend on.
They voted to re-elect a man who invites foreign interference in our elections and has done everything in his power to suppress the vote.
They voted to re-elect a man whose incompetence and indifference have led to the deaths of 250,000 Americans (and counting) and who mocks all the scientifically proven tools for fighting the coronavirus.
They voted to re-elect a man who defied the advice of the CDC and continued to hold “super-spreader” rallies that directly led to thousands of coronavirus infections and a few hundred more deaths.
They voted to re-elect a man who pretends to godliness while he pays hundreds of thousands of dollars to porn stars to keep them quiet and fights off credible accusations of sexual assault by twenty-six women.
They voted to re-elect a man who was impeached for inviting foreign interference in our elections.
They voted to re-elect a man whose family of grifters have enriched themselves by tens of millions of dollars while serving as White House “advisers.”
They voted to re-elect a man who is determined to kill the Affordable Care Act, killing the Act’s protections regarding pre-existing conditions and LGBTQ discrimination.
They voted to re-elect a man who is fighting in court to give doctors, nurses, hospitals, and EMTs the right to refuse service to anyone whom they perceive to be LGBTQ.
They voted to re-elect a man who reinstituted the gag rule that denies PEPFAR funds to any healthcare organization that even mentions abortion as a healthcare option, effectively crippling anti-HIV/AIDS work in many African nations.
They voted to re-elect a man who has squandered $15 billion on 500 miles of ineffective border wall.
They voted to re-elect a man who has spent one-third of his presidency on the golf course and burdened the American taxpayer with more than $150-million in travel and security costs.
They voted to re-elect a man who has waged a full frontal attack on LGBTQ rights in housing, employment, healthcare, and the military; who wants to make it legal for homeless shelters to reject transgender people and gay couples; who refused to issue visas to the spouses of LGBTQ diplomats; who is fighting to give adoption agencies the right to refuse same-sex couples; who tried to deny citizenship to the foreign-born children of American same-sex couples; who is, in short, the most rabidly anti-LGBTQ president in modern history.
They voted to re-elect a man who cut funds for HOPWA, the housing program relied upon by thousands of people living with HIV.
They voted to re-elect a man who was forced to repay $25-million to students at his fraudulent “university” and who was caught stealing money from his own cancer charity, leading to his and his spawn’s lifetime ban from charitable organizations.
They voted to re-elect a man who gave a trillion-dollar-plus tax break to the top one percent while driving the deficit to over $3 trillion.
They voted to re-elect a man who is so unbelievably stupid, he stared directly into a solar eclipse.
In short, they voted to re-elect the most incompetent, paranoid, racist, sexist, narcissistic, vicious, rage-filled, bigoted hate-mongering fascist who ever entered the White House. Even if Joe Biden has been confirmed as president-elect by the time this column is published, America has shown its true colors.
America, you disgust me.
Addendum, 11/11/2020: So what can we do now that the Orange Menace’s reign of errors is coming to a close? First, we have to remember that despite President-elect Biden’s having won more votes than any other presidential candidate in US history, defeating the incumbent by 5-million+ votes, those 70-million+ people who voted for the incumbent are still here, still among us, still cultishly loyal to their leader, and still really pissed off. Our only comfort is knowing that we outnumber them, knowing that we can overwhelm them at the ballot box. We must unite and drive the obstructionist Republicans out of the U.S. Senate and out of state legislatures. We must continue to march, to protest, to raise our voices against fascism, racism, and bigotry. We must continue to ACT UP, FIGHT BACK. We must never let the haters win again.
