Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Each year that we have approached Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA), they have come through with amazing items for sale to support the important work they do. Confession: This is one of my favorite AIDS-related charities. For me, BC/EFA encompasses two things near and dear to me——Broadway and HIV/AIDS activism. And the value of the work they do is matched only by the fun they seem to have doing it!

What could be more fun or festive than BC/EFA’s “Legends” Holiday Ornaments. Introduced in 2008, honoring the brightest divas ever to grace a Broadway stage, “Legends” is a series of collectable hand-made glass ornaments depicting legendary Broadway divas in their signature roles. In past years they have honored Carol Burnett, Barbra Streisand, Bernadette Peters, and of course the grandest diva of them all, Harvey Fierstein! In addition, BC/EFA’s “A Catalogue of Giving” offers myriad options for year-round gift-giving—clothing, jewelry, music, ad infinitum. But my favorite remains the “Legends” series!

Tell Me More: The only diva so far to warrant a second appearance in BC/EFA’s holidays is the inimitable Angela Lansbury, lounging on the moon with trumpet in hand, gorgeously styled as Mame Dennis in Mame. Like the other ornaments in the series, this was designed by Glen Hanson and the Christopher Radko Company exclusively for BC/EFA.

Also available is the Broadway Cares 2019 Snow Globe, featuring the marquees of more than 20 Broadway musicals mounted in 2019, while the classic “There’s No Business Like Show Business” plays when wound.

How Much: You can put Angela Lansbury on your holiday tree for just $65 or shake the Snow Globe for $170.

How to Order: For the ornament, the snow globe, or any of the other dozens of items BC/EFA offers, go to or call (212) 840-0770, ext 238, to place an order.

Who Benefits: Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. Since 1988, BC/EFA has raised more than $300 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses. Utilizing the unique talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, BC/EFA is the major supporter of the essential social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, and The Friedman Health Center. Broadway Cares also awards annual grants to more than 450 AIDS organizations in all fifty states. BC/EFA programs also include Classical Action (recruiting classical, opera, and jazz performers to raise funds) and Dancers Responding to AIDS. Each purchase allows Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS to further their mission of helping those affected by HIV and AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.
